THE SIR RUFOUS BETTONG AWARD 2011 winner for care of our environment is Ravenshoe Gardening Team employed by Tablelands Regional Council

Previously won by Dr John Winters, Saeed de Ridder and Ravenshoe Garden Club. The Sir Rufous Bettong Award is an award for those who make a difference for good in our environment.

Rhonda, Jenny and Jan who are this TRC Gardening team have really earned this award for caring for our environment. Ravenshoe’s gardens look so lovely and well cared for. All three of these women have said “It’s our job.” We know that, they are being awarded for a job well done and the award is given to them with much appreciation. The Sir Rufous Bettong award is a beautiful sculpture, carved for us by master woodworker Buddy Smith. It is a curving shape showing the tail of this bettong, which carries the leaf material with which it makes it`s nest. The leaves are all magnificently carved from different dry-country timbers. This carving sits on a plinth, around which each year, a small brass plate is added with each year’s winners. The carving can always been seen at the Visitor Centre in Ravenshoe. Congratulations to Rhonda, Jenny and Jan on winning the award – Well Done!!

Sir Rufous Bettong Award Trophy

As a result of our initiative in creating the Sir Rufous Bettong award Ravenshoe Visitor Centre was recognised for our work to promote environmental awareness with the Australia Day 2009 "Environmental Excellence Award" by Tablelands Regional Council.
